Abstract | The purpose of this study was to clarify how older adults with dementia experience and define "joy" while living in a long-term care health facility. This study described the results of a qualitative analysis of semi-structured interviews conducted separately with three older adults with dementia living in a long-term care health facility. The aspects of "joy" for older adults with dementia living in the long-term care health facility were classified into six categories: Participants felt a [sense of accomplishment, pride, and worthwhileness for fulfilling a role] from their past role as a mother and experiences of engaging in work. They obtained [joys gained from hobbies and classes] based on the memories of hobbies and classes they did when they were younger. They had pleasant feelings associated with [realizing the lifestyles they wish] while living at the long-term care health facility. They felt "joy" through [interacting with others] (e.g., care providers, other facility residents, and family members). They were conscious of the ties with their families who live separate from them and felt a sense of safety and happiness from [being able to see their families]. They have [hopes of living at a place they wish], such as living in places they are used to and/or in places that they felt were enjoyable. Therefore, to provide "joy" to older adults with dementia living at long-term care health facilities, an opportunity for them to interact with others should be provided. It is also necessary to provide support so that these older persons can do what they like to do and live as they wish once care providers understand their wishes. |
