| Abstract | This article explores the relationship between COVID-19 and herpes zoster (shingles), focusing on the risk of shingles following COVID-19 infection or vaccination, as well as the emerging link between shingles and dementia. It has been reported that individuals who contract COVID-19 may show a significantly increased risk of developing shingles due to both immunological and psychological stresses associated with the illness. However, a meta-analysis revealed no significant increase in the risk of shingles following COVID-19 vaccination. Recent studies also suggested a possible association between shingles and an increased risk of dementia, potentially due to viral reactivation and chronic inflammation affecting the central nervous system. Furthermore, some evidence indicates that shingles vaccination may contribute to dementia prevention. In Japan, routine vaccination against herpes zoster began in 2024, reflecting the growing recognition of the vaccine's public health importance, not only in preventing shingles and its complications but also in potentially reducing the future burden of dementia. |
